The
right
flyfishing apparel can really help improve a day out
on the water. No, you will not necessarily catch more fish just
because you have on the right flyfishing apparel, but you could.
And you will certainly be more comfortable while out on your boat
or wading out in the water, etc., if you are wearing great flyfishing
apparel, regardless of how many fish you catch or how big they are!
If you want to be able to focus all of your attention on the "cast"
at hand, then you want to be as comfortable as possible. You do
not want to be thinking about how cold your feet are or how hot
your torso is or how wet your shorts are. You want to be thinking
about the fish, your surroundings, and other pleasantries. If you
have to constantly be thinking about your flyfishing apparel, then
you need to get some new stuff.
Once you have put it on, you should not have to think about your
flyfishing apparel at all. There shouldn't be anything to think
about! Your shirt should be breathable and wicking. It should give
you a full freedom of movement when you are casting. Your waders
should keep you warm and dry, but not too hot. Your fly fishing
boots or sandals should give you the right grip you need as you
are walking along a slippery creek bed. Your fly fishing vest should
hold everything you need and have it at easy access...
Are you starting to get the point? Are you starting to see how
important your flyfishing apparel is? Other pieces of fly fishing
apparel that you need to make sure are comfortable are items like
your hat. You want your hat to shield your face and eyes from the
sun; it should fit securely around your head, but not too tight;
it should have a chin strap so that you do not have to worry about
losing it when hit by an up-canyon breeze or the wind creating by
a fast-moving boat, etc.
If you cannot tell what the weather will be like, then you should
layer your flyfishing apparel. It is much easier to take off a layer
or two if you get hot than to start with only your base layer and
have nothing to put on over it. Depending on where you live or where
you plan to fish, you may have to invest in other types of flyfishing
apparel like rain gear. Be wise about the flyfishing apparel you
choose and buy.
You may even consider buying some of the great flyfishing apparel
that is treated to repel insects and/or to give you extra protection
from the sun!
