To
fully appreciate the sport of flyfishing,
you most definitely do not need to be a professional angler. In
fact, even beginners can thoroughly appreciate the sport. There
is much more to flyfishing than simply catching fish.
There have been times that I have been out on the river and I have
not caught a single fish. That does not mean, however, that I did
not enjoy myself. For me, the sport of flyfishing offers a wonderful
chance to enjoy nature.
When I am flyfishing, I spend the majority of my time breathing
in the fresh air, listening to the water washing by and the wind
blowing the leaves. I take in all of the sights, sounds, smells,
and even feelings that I can.
Of course, flyfishing does not just give me a chance to enjoy nature,
it gives me a chance to find peace within myself. There is nothing
like the solitude that comes with flyfishing to empty out my mind
of stresses and hardships and replace them with serenity and happiness.
The casting motion of flyfishing is almost hypnotic, taking me to
a place that I just cannot get to in the “real” world.
Although I stated earlier that I enjoy flyfishing, regardless of
whether or not I end up catching a fish, this is not to say that
I do not love catching fish! There are few things as thrilling as
feeling a fish bite at the end of your line. And the subsequent
fight to reel in and land the fish is incomparable to anything that
I know.
And once I get to glimpse and feel the fish up close, living and
breathing, I truly feel at one with nature. But not as much so as
when I ease the hook out of the mouth and gently let the fish go
free. There are few sports quite like flyfishing. There are few
sports that bring you as close to nature and as close to your true
self as flyfishing can.
