Are
you finally planning to invest in some fly
fishing gear? Deciding to finally buy gear is the easy
part. Now you need to decide which fly fishing gear to buy! This
can actually be a rather difficult decision, especially since there
are so many types and brands of gear on the market today.
Nonetheless, there are some basic pieces of fly fishing gear that
you will most definitely need. Here is a list of and more information
on basic fly fishing gear:
Fly Rod – Your fly fishing rod is, perhaps, the most important
piece of fly fishing gear that you can buy. It serves three main
purposes: A good fly rod will allow you to cast with the power and
accuracy that you desire while still allowing the fly and line to
be placed on the water smoothly (so that the fish are not spooked).
The rod also provides line control over the line that is out on
the water. The fly rod is also used to set the hook on the fish,
fight the fish, and land the fish. A good fly rod will be flexible,
yet strong.
Fly Reel – Many people believe that fly reels simply hold
the line, but this is not true: they are a much more important piece
of fly fishing gear. They do so much more! Once you have hooked
your fish, you need to have a reliable fly reel: you want to be
able to reel line in and out in a smooth and tangle-free way. Most
likely, you are going to be fine with a single action fly reel.
Such a reel is the most popular type on the market today. Almost
all serious anglers use a single action fly reel. It is a simple
reel, and it is not likely to break down on you. It is also easy
to change spools on. Single actions are reliable and durable.
Fly Lines. The type of fly line that you use depends greatly upon
the type of fly fishing that you plan on doing (the same is true
of reels and rods). Your fly line should match your rod and reel.
In other words, if you have a 5 weight rod and a 5 weight reel,
get a 5 weight fly line. You want all of your fly fishing gear to
be balanced. It is the weight of the line, not the weight of the
fly, that allows an angler to cast. You therefore do not want a
fly line that is either heavier than or lighter than the rod itself.
Flies. If you do not know much about flies, do not worry. Lots of
us do not! Before you go out fishing, though, stop by a tackle shop.
Ask someone there what fish are biting on at the place where you
are going. Start learning from the best! The best flies for a certain
area (and certain fish, etc.) can change often. Always ask. Eventually,
you can start to figure it out for yourself. If you did not have
time to stop at the tackle shop, check and see what is hatching
around the river or lake you plan to fish at. Use a fly that resembles
that type of insect!
The fly rod, fly reel, fly line, and flies make up the most important
pieces of fly fishing gear. Once you have these items, though, you
can start gearing up in other areas. You can get a fly fishing vest,
waders, a tackle box, etc.
