Fly
fishing rods fall into a great deal of price ranges.
There are those that are less than $100 and there are those that
are upwards of $1000. The question is, is it worth spending the
extra money to get an expensive fly fishing rod?
It is, generally, worth it to spend the extra money to get a rod
that is around $150-300 as opposed to a $100 or less fly fishing
rod, but what about paying for one that is more than $500. More
than $1000?
And it is even possible to find some decent models around $100,
but it is also quite possible to find rather poorly made ones, as
well. But should you buy a rod that is 5 times the price of a low-end
model? Ten times the price?
Here is what you will most likely get when you buy a more expensive
fly fishing rod:
More cosmetic appeal (like a nickel silver finish)
Graduated taper
Lighter weight
Durability
Uniformity of flex
Better components
Balance
Higher graphite modulus
Vibration dampening (for accuracy and distance)
Smooth casting stroke
So, how much will these features of expensive fly fishing rods
really help? Unless you are an expert, you very likely will not
notice the difference between an expensive model and a medium-range
model unless you do a side-by-side comparison.
Realize that a fly fishing rod that cost 5 times as much as a lower
end model will not likely be 5 times better. It will be better,
yes, but not in direct proportion to the price. For high end anglers,
though, these subtle differences in a fly fishing rod may very well
be worth the price. If you are just starting out, on the other hand,
go with a medium-priced model.
Now, if you are prone to losing things, it is most definitely not
worth paying for the high-end fly fishing rod!
